It is possible to input grades for an item that students completed for your course outside of VHL Central. The first step is to add an external assignment in the Scores area in the gradebook. Assignments added to the gradebook will:

- not count towards the student overall grades until the due-date has passed.

- not be counted as Late, so the gradebook will never apply “late penalties” to an External Item.

- automatically be given full points after the due date has passed if the item is in a ‘Credit only’ gradebook category.

- not count against the student grade, even after the due date has passed if the item has not yet been scored by the instructor. Score will remain as "Pending" until an instructor enters a score.

 1. From any page in the Scores area of a course section, click “+ Add Item.”

2. Enter information into the text fields for title, due date, and points possible.

3. Use the drop-down menus to select a category and lesson to place the assignment within your gradebook’s current organization.

4. To add this assignment to all of the course's sections at once, click the option "Copy this item to all sections".

5. Save the item.

Enter grades for an external assignment

1. From the Scores view, select “Enter scores” from the assignment column’s drop-down menu.

2. Enter grades as points earned for each student. Note: "Note to self" is optional.

 2. Enter changes for title, due date, or points possible.

3. Click “save.”

Delete an external assignment and its associated grades

1. From the Scores view, select “Edit item” from the assignment column’s drop-down menu.

2. Click “delete.”

3. Click “OK” to confirm.
